Dorothy L. Johnson, known lovingly to many as "Dot," passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, in New Paris, Ohio. Born on July 28, 1947, in Twenty Mile Stand, Ohio, daughter of the late Edward and Viola (Stepp) Begley. Dorothy lived a life marked by strength, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.
A self-employed housekeeper, Dorothy dedicated herself to her work with the same care and attention she extended to those around her. Her life was a testament to her role as a caregiver—a teacher to all who knew her, a woman of blunt honesty, yet possessing a soft, kind heart and an indomitable spirit. Those who were fortunate enough to know her remember her as a fine woman, strong in character, and profoundly devoted to those she loved.
Dorothy's early years were shaped by her education at Jackson Township High School in Preble County, Ohio, where she laid the foundation for a life rich in learning and nurturing. She carried her passion for knowledge throughout her life, finding solace and joy in reading. Her love for Christmas music and season, cleaning, watching the Hallmark Channel, and simply making spaces brighter reflected her vibrant personality and zest for life.
Throughout her life, Dorothy held close the memories that brought her joy—cooking, baking, and getting her hair fixed and fixing others hair—cherished rituals that brought comfort and warmth not only to herself but to everyone around her. These simple pleasures, paired with her dedication to her family, defined her gentle and steadfast nature.
Dorothy was a proud matriarch. She shared a deep and enduring love with her husband of 62 years, Dellis “Jay” Johnson. Together, they built a family filled with love and support. She was the esteemed mother of Rhonda (Steve) Sickmann and Ronnie Johnson. Though her beloved son Lonnie J. “Ned” Johnson and daughter-in-law Debra Lynn Worley have passed before her, their memories remain forever in the hearts of those who loved them.
Her sister, Kathy Ray, along with her brother-in-law Carl Ray, who is also deceased, were part of her lifelong circle of family. Dorothy’s pride extended generously to her grandchildren—Travis (Alysha) Johnson, Krisha (Dillon) Bullock, Robb (Brooke) Ullery, Brookly (Chet Clark) Johnson, Ryan (Jessica) Johnson, and Derrick (Airell) Johnson—and her great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Hank, Kash, Westlynn, Hayden, Dean, Alexis (Levi), Makenzie, Kaydence, and Everleigh. She was also blessed to witness the joy of her great-great-grandchild, Grayson.
Among her proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren, as well as her dedication to helping others in need, reflecting a heart that extended beyond immediate family to embrace all those in need of care and compassion.
To honor her memory, two services will be held. A Graveside Service is scheduled for Friday, May 8, 2026, at New Westville Cemetery, beginning at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Daniel Moses officiating. Later, a Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at One Ten Venue, 110 Melody Lane, New Paris, Ohio commencing at 5:00 p.m. and concluding at 8:00 p.m. These gatherings will provide a moment for family and friends to come together, share stories, and celebrate Dorothy’s legacy of love and resilience.
Dorothy L. Johnson’s life was a tapestry woven with kindness, strength, and devotion. She was a beacon of love and guidance, a grandmother figure not only to her kin but to many, embodying the role of a teacher of life and caregiver to all. Her directness and strong will were tempered with a warm generosity that touched the lives of many.
As we remember "Dot," we hold close the tenderness and strength that defined her. She leaves behind a world made better by her presence and a family who will carry her spirit forward in their hearts forever. May she rest in peace knowing the profound impact she had on so many lives.
