Melvin Ray Scott, 90 of New Paris, OH, passed away peacefully Friday evening, February 26, 2016 in the home he built and created a lifetime of memories for so many, surrounded and held by his loving family. Mel was born on May 13, 1925 in Loudon, Tennessee to the late George "Berry" Scott and Ella (Russell) Scott Mitchell. He was a Marine in W.W. II proudly serving his country in the Pacific theatre, most notably at Guadalcanal and Okinawa.

After the war, he returned home and fell for a sweet southern beauty named Anna Marie and married the absolute love of his life on December 19, 1946. They moved soon after north to the Richmond, IN area to start their life and family, finally buying land and building a house with their own hands outside of New Paris, OH in 1953.

Mel worked several jobs in the area over the years, including at Swain Robinson and later 20 years for Commercial Motor Freight retiring in 1981. He later turned a hobby into a business, creating kitchen cabinet sets for people's homes. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Cincinnati Reds baseball, playing the lottery, any and all kinds of ice cream and spoiling grandkids and great grandkids, especially the girls.

Survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Anna (Miller) Scott; daughters: Rita (Tim) Harvey and Sue Scott both of New Paris, OH; sons: David (Karen) Scott of Rushville, IN; Daniel (Susan) Scott of Lawrenceburg, KY; Randall Scott of Orlando, FL and Stanley (Gwen) Scott of Greenfield, IN; special grandson: Monty (Heather) Walker; son-in-law: Steve Walker; daughter-in-law: Priscilla Scott; sister-in-law Zula Scott; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his daughter: Carolyn Walker in 2006; son: Michael Scott in 2002; grandson Jacob Ross in 2015; brothers: Russell "Scotty" Scott; Allen "Red" Scott; and sister: Margaret.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Barnes Funeral Home 109 West Main Street New Paris, OH. The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, March 4, 2016 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Spring Lawn Cemetery New Paris, OH with full military honors provided by the Preble County Honor Guard.

The family would like to thank all the various health care professionals who provided such wonderful care to Mel over his last years, especially Dr. Phillip Scott and Dr. Jeevan Sekhar and the Reid Health Hospice.
