John Bettelon

John Bettelon

John Bettelon, 64, of Navarre, Florida, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday evening (September 4, 2005) after a battle with cancer. He is a former resident of New Paris, Ohio, and Hagerstown, Indiana.
John was born in Richmond on August 2, 1941, to Edward George and Mary Isabelle (Wallen) Bettelon. He graduated from Jefferson High School in New Paris in 1959. After attending several banking schools, he became a prominent banker in the area. He started his career at Second National Bank in Richmond, then spent years at both the Eaton National Bank of New Paris and the First National Bank (later Bank One) of Hagerstown. John then left the banking industry and finished his career as an advertising sales consultant with the Graphic and Palladium-Item. He retired in 1999, and moved to Navarre, Florida.
John was a 30-year member of the Lions Club and past President of both the Richmond Lions Club and Hagerstown Lions Club. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow award presented by the Lions International. He was a member of the Richmond Lions bowling team for many years. He was a past member of the Jefferson Township Booster Clubs and spent many years coaching youth baseball and softball teams. He was a member of the 1972-1974 state championship Richmond Miracles Softball Team. He was an outstanding high school athlete, lettering in baseball, basketball, and track, and was recently inducted into the Preble County Athletic Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Madonna (Wilson) Bettelon; two daughters Lisa (Steve) Captain and Jona (Mike) Friedman of Navarre, Florida; son Phil (Allison) Bettelon of New Paris; one brother Edwin Lee Bettelon of Ohio; grandchildren Jared, Emily and Olivia Daugherty, Jordan and Natalie Bettelon, Derek and Katie Captain, and Madison Friedman; and one great-grandson John Ethan Daugherty.
He was proceeded in death by parents Edward George and Mary Isabelle (Wallen) Bettelon and grandparents Leander and Myrtle (Oynett) Bettelon and Joe and Mae Wallen.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. (Ohio time) on Saturday - September 10, 2005 at Barnes Funeral Home - 109 West Main Street - New Paris, Ohio with Rev. Herschel Murray officiating. Interment will be in Springlawn Cemetary - New Paris, Ohio. Friends may call on Friday - September 9, 2005 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. (Ohio time) at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Lions Club, Hagerstown Lions Club, Jefferson Township Booster Club, or the American Cancer Society, in his memory.
