Ethel Darnell "Miss Ethel" (Bruffey) Meyer, age 92, of Pineville, North Carolina, was taken from us to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 18, 2009. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Miss Ethel was born January 24, 1917 in Crozet, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Leonard Archie & Susan Ethel (Ballard) Bruffey. She attended and graduated magnum cum laude from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina in 1937. After graduating she married John Bernard Meyer on September 19, 1937. She then began teaching high school English and chemistry.

Ethel's favorite sayings were also the way she lived her life: 'If life gives you lemons, make lemonade; If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all; Don't ask someone a yes or no question if you can't accept either answer.' She never met a stranger and made many friends at the Fireside in Matthews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Bernard Meyer; brothers, Vernon Bruffey, Paul Bruffey and John Bruffey; sister, Mildred Bruffey; brothers-in-law, Charles Meyer and Bob Meyer; sisters-in-law, Martha Bruffey, Ann Bruffey, Betty Campbell and Marjorie Bergdorf; caregiver, Edwina Hayes.

Ethel is survived by her four children, Judith (Lloyd) Thomson of Packwood, Washington, Joan (Carl) Edwards of Pineville, North Carolina, John (Donna) Meyer II of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Janet (Tim) Meyer of Charleston, South Carolina; ten grandchildren, Christopher (Lisa) Thomson, Michael (Carla) Thomson, Karen (Barry) Orth, Lorrie (Kirk) Hackett, Mollie (Mark) Chewning, John F Meyer III, Pamela Meyer, Paul (Rachel) Chamberlain, Sarah Snyder, Susan (Jeff) Harrell; great grandchildren, Patrick Thomson, Kevin Thomson, Tiffany (Chris) Pond, Christopher Thomson, Andrew Thomson, Kylie Hackett, Kirstyn Hackett, Luke Chewning, Wyatt Chewning, Myron Meyer, Neil Chamberlain, Ethan Chamberlain, Chase Smith, Erika Chamberlain, Amanda Harrell, Jacob Harrell; great great grandchildren Jacqueline Pond, Caidence Pond, Natalie Pond; sisters-in-law, Joan Kuck of Cambridge, Ohio, Barbara Harper of Dayton, Ohio and Nita Bruffey of Fayetteville, North Carolina; caregivers, Barbara Walker, and Angela Wallace.

Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Lowe Funeral Home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Rd., Matthews, North Carolina with Hospice Chaplain Brett Hedgepeth, M. Div. officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home in North Carolina.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Visitation Catholic Church, 407 East Main Street, Eaton, Ohio with Rev. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Barnes Funeral Home, 220 East Main Street, Eaton, Ohio. Interment will be held at Mound Hill Union Cemetery in Eaton, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1232 22nd Street N. W., Washington, D.C. 20037-1292 or a National or Local Hospice Charity. Condolences may be sent to the family via Guest Book at www.barnesfuneralhome.com
